In the year 2000, Martin went on a journey to re-discover the early midieval Scotland. His interest was to study the Pictish Standing Stones from the period 600-900 AD. The interpretations of Archaeologists and historians vary widely on the purpose of the Pictish stones and symbolism. Maybe it was a way to commemorate an important event. The stones also could be landmarks for important rituals manifested in ancient times. Usually these standing stones were found in fields. Some of them still stand on the place of thier origin. Others have been moved to alternative places like church yards or museums. Some have been incorporated into walls or used as gravestones.
The journey through Scotland was an inspiring experience for Martin, one that influences his artwork up to this day.
